MINNESOTA SPOTLIGHT

February 16th, 2012

Despite frigid winters and a lack of vertical, Minnesota still finds a way to deliver an epic time to shredders of all ability. We caught up with some of our crew to see why they’re pumped to call Minnesota their home.

Jordan getting groovy at Hyland Hills!

Name:  Jordan Michilot
Hometown:  Bloomington, MN
Home Mountain:  Hyland
Why is snowboarding in Minnesota so radical compared to places with ‘actual’ mountains:
I love snowboarding and living here because of the friends and tow ropes! The city is awesome and there is always something going on. Spots are really close and Hyland is always a blast!

When in doubt, going heels first down the stair set is always a good call!

Name: Drew Poganski
Hometown:
St. Cloud, MN
Home Mountain: Powder Ridge
Why are you stoked to live in a place and ride a resort with less than 500 vertical feet.

Snowboarding in Minnesota is sick because you can ride the tow rope all day with your homies and session the whole park without missing a trick. And street is always sick because there are so many spots! If there’s enough snow, you can hit a few spots each day you go out an film.

Seatbelts are not only required in Minnesota, they’re also very fashionable. Matt ‘Boody’ Boudreaux impresses some fans at Hyland Hills. Photo by Jake Durham.

Home Mountain:
Mount Du Lac is on fire right now
What stokes your fire about riding in one of the flattest states in the union:

Rope tows, snaking, getting cut off, small hills, big hills, good rails, and good people.

AVALANCHE REFLECTIONS

February 16th, 2012

We triggered this slide at Vail Pass last weekend. It wasn’t quite big enough to do any serious damage, but it definitely gave us a little reality check followed by a moment to grasp how much we really hope to be snowboarding for many years to come…

The Working Man Wins in the End!

One of our crew, Bob Abrams, got off work @ 5 and won the Boreal Expression session contest @ 6. He seriously showed up in his Holiday Inn work attire and then geared up and destroyed it. Bob showed up and schooled all the kids that have been shredding all day long. He combo’d tricked every side of the Red Bull obstacle and stood out among the rest. Also, Kasandra Dolan, who is now repping Academy, won the girls division, (which in actuality would have got 2nd in the men’s). This girl rips. Both Bob and Kasandra both won GNU snowboards that will help pay their bills!

X GAMES JAM

February 8th, 2012

Our friend Ryan Murphy won a spot to compete at the 2012 USASA rail jam on the X-Games course in Aspen.  One of the youngest competitors in the mix, Ryan held his own with a ton of solid moves and clean style. We caught up with him to get his 2-cents about his experience at the X-Games:

“The x games setup was sick, it was made by SPT(Snow Park Technologies) and most of the features were right off the streets such as a cement barrier and a storage unit. There were 20 riders from all over the US; most of them were much older than me but they were all cool. The course was a bit icy but it was fun and there were tons of lines to choose from. Getting to compete on the pro course was both exciting and challenging. The Academy propaganda board was great, it had the perfect amount of flex to lock onto the huge street rails and the perfect amount of pop to clear the gaps onto them. Overall it was a great experience and I had a great time representing Academy at the 2012 winter x-games!” said Ryan.

Congrats to Ryan for making it to the big stage and stoked to have him spreading the Academy love at X!

USASA TAHOE WINNER

February 8th, 2012

Congrats to USASA North Tahoe Series winner John Coley for grabbin a new Rhythm board at the contest last weekend. Rock On John!

MELISSA CRUISING KEYSTONE

February 4th, 2012

Melissa enjoyed a little Rocky Mountain bonus after chilling at SIA in the Academy Classroom by taking advantage of a sunny day at Keystone to test out the new Serenity board! The Serenity passed with flying colors, and Melissa dialed in some good marks as well!
